NASSAU, Bahamas -
NOTE: Lamar women's basketball coach Larry Tidwell is serving as the head coach of the national women's basketball team of the Bahamas. The team is currently competing in the Caribbean Basketball Championships. Coach Tidwell provides this update from his team's latest contest.
Thursday proved to be a cold night in the Bahamas, as the hometown favorites lost a tough, hard-fought 49-45 decision to Trinidad and Tobago in the closing minutes.
Once again, shooting from the field plagued our team, as we were 18-of-58 from the field and were 0-of-9 from 3-point land. That comes to a paltry 31 percent from the field, and that will not win many games at any level of play. Also, our execution was very suspect at the end of the game, especially in the last four minutes, as well as the last two minutes of the first half.
Our inability to finish at the rim proved costly with opportunities missed that could have put the game away in those final moments. Once again, lesson learned, but this time it was on the wrong side of the scoreboard.
However, and I want to be very clear on this, I was very proud of our players! They fought on every play, got on the floor for loose balls, outrebounded a very physical team and gave all they had for the entire 40 minutes. Now, as the head coach, I have to get their confidence back to a very high level. Tough games loom ahead the next three days against the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic and Cuba, so we have to "shake it off" and move forward.
* Linda Pierre and Annie Moultrie-Sands played tough inside, with Pierre leading the way with 12 points, while Annie collected nine rebounds. The Bahamas won the rebounding battle 46-40.
* Special thanks to Marty Tidwell, my youngest son, who coaches at Frisco Wakeland HS, and fellow coach Ross Reedy for coming down to help with practices the previous week. They helped make a difference, and it's much appreciated.
* Tropical Storm Emily looks like it has been downgraded, so thank goodness for that.
My final report will be on Monday, Aug. 8, as the weekend will be full of games and scouting reports.
