Lady Cardinals Basketball Releases 2008-09 Schedule

Sept. 25, 2008

BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar University women's basketball coach Larry Tidwell put together a strong schedule for the 2008-09 season that features 16 home games, four contests against Big 12 foes and as many as eight games against 2008 post season teams.

Lamar opens the regular season at home against Grambling State on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m., the first of eight non-conference home contests. In non-conference play away from the Montagne Center the Lady Cardinals will face Texas Tech, Baylor, Texas and will play in the Iowa State tournament in Ames, Iowa.

Some of the highlights to the home schedule include a matchup with former Southland Conference foe Louisiana Monroe on Dec. 6 and eight Southland Conference games with five against SLC West Division foes as Lamar switches divisions for the next two seasons. The Lady Cardinals will also take on rival McNeese State at home on January 17.

After opening the year against Grambling the Lady Cardinals will head to Lubbock, Texas for a showdown with Texas Tech on Nov. 21. They return to the Montagne Center for their next four contests, taking on Texas Southern, Alcorn State, LSU-Shreveport and ULM.

A trip to Waco, Texas on December 8 to face Baylor precedes another pair of home games against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 18 and 21. The non-conference schedule is closed out with the Cyclone Challenge on Dec. 29-30, a trip to Austin, Texas to take on the University of Texas on Jan. 3 and a home game against Paul Quinn College on Jan. 6.

"Our non-conference schedule is really going to prepare us for conference play," Tidwell said. "The four games against Big 12 opponents and starting a series with Louisiana-Monroe is important because these are good games to get us ready for Southland play."

The 16-game SLC schedule tips off on the road on Jan. 10 against Southeastern Louisiana before the Lady Cards return home for a pair of games against UT-Arlington and McNeese.

The SLC Tournament will remain at a neutral site and will be contested March 11-14 at the Merrill Center in Katy, Texas. The top two teams from each division and the four teams with the next-best conference records will comprise the field for the eight-team postseason tournament. The tournament winner will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The 2008-09 Lady Cardinals return seven letter winners from the last year's squad which posted a 19-13 record. The 19 wins were the most since the 1991-92 season and was the first winning season for LU since 1994-95

Lady Cardinals season ticket renewals are available until Oct. 3 and season ticket sales will begin the following week. Call the Montagne Center Ticket Office at 880-1715 for more information or to reserve your tickets.
