Kalis Loyd named preseason first-team all-conference
Oct. 24, 2012
BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University senior guard Kalis Loyd was named a Southland Conference women’s basketball preseason all-conference first team selection, the conference announced today. Loyd, who has been a first-team all-conference performer in each of the last two seasons for the Lady Cardinals, enters the season ranked in the top-10 career lists at Lamar for points, rebounds, assists and steals.
Kalis is definitely deserving of the honor,” Lamar coach Larry Tidwell said. “She is one of the best players in the conference, and has been a big reason for our success.”
Loyd enters the season ranked fourth on Lamar’s all-time scoring list with 1,431 points, 299 shy of the school record of 1,730 held by Uirannah Jackson. Her 625 rebounds are eighth on the Lamar career chart. Loyd is fourth with 282 assists and second with 210 steals.
The Lady Cardinals were selected to finish sixth in the conference in both the coaches’ poll and sports information directors’ poll. Two-time defending tournament champion McNeese State was selected to win the league title in both polls.
Lamar is coming off its school-record fifth consecutive winning season, finishing with a 16-15 overall record and 8-8 mark in conference play.
“I think being picked to finish sixth is a fair assessment,” Tidwell said. “It will also serve as some motivation for us.”
The Lady Cardinals open the season at noon Nov. 9 when they travel to defending national champion Baylor. The home opener is set for 7 p.m. Nov. 12 against UT Tyler.
