PLANO - The Lamar University women's basketball team was tabbed 10th in the 2004-05 Southland Conference preseason polls released Wednesday, as determined by voting from the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
The coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own teams, have selected Texas-Arlington for the conference title while defending SLC regular-season and tournament champion Northwestern State received the top spot from the SIDs. UTA was second in the SID poll and NSU nabbed the runner-up position in the coaches' poll.
Predicted to finish third in both preseason polls is Louisiana-Monroe, which earned one first-place nod by the coaches and collected three from the SIDs.
Three teams that were picked to finish in the top three a year ago are split between both preseason polls for fourth through sixth place in 2004-05. The coaches picked Stephen F. Austin fourth, UT-San Antonio fifth and Texas State sixth. The SIDs, however, have the Bobcats and the Roadrunners tied for fourth with SFA sitting sixth.
The remaining five spots were identical in both polls placing McNeese State seventh, Sam Houston State eighth, Southeastern Louisiana ninth, Lamar in 10th and Nicholls State rounding out the polls at 11th.
Lamar will look to improve upon its 4-22 record from a year ago and break into the league's top eight. The top eight finishers in the regular season will advance to the O'Reilly Auto Parts/SLC Tournament for a shot at the title and an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
The SLC also released its preseason all-conference teams on Wednesday which featured five players on each team. Northwestern State, Texas-Arlington and Stephen F. Austin each placed two players on the first or second team, while Louisiana-Monroe, Texas State, McNeese State and Southeastern Louisiana all had one representative.
