Women's basketball looks to cool off Rice

BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar Lady Cardinals close out 2012 as they head to Rice for a non-conference women's basketball game at 2 p.m. Sunday. Lamar (7-2) is 3-2 on the road this season. The Lady Cardinals bring a two-game winning streak into the contest, and come off a 68-52 win at Houston Baptist on Dec. 21. Kalis Loyd leads Lamar in scoring at 16.8 points per game and in rebounding at 7.7 boards per game. Loyd moved into second place on Lamar's all-time scoring list in the win over Houston Baptist. Her 1,582 points are 148 shy of Uirannah Jackson's school record of 1,730 points.

Rice (7-4) is on a five-game winning streak. The Owls rolled to a 75-54 victory over Texas-Pan American on Friday. Rice, which is 6-1 at home, is led by Jessica Kuster, who averages 16.6 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. Lamar leads the overall series 22-5. Last season, Lamar claimed a 61-54 win over Rice at the Montagne Center, as Loyd totaled 18 points and nine rebounds. Sunday's game will be broadcast live on Lamar's website, www.LamarCardinals.com. Following Sunday's game, Lamar opens Southland Conference play with a pair of road contests. The Lady Cardinals are at Stephen F. Austin at 6 p.m. Jan. 3 and at Northwestern State at 1 p.m. Jan. 5.
