CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- Led by Therese Nilsson's low round of the day, the Lamar women's golf team has a one-stroke lead after 36 holes of the Stripes Islander Spring Invitational at the Corpus Christi Country Club.
Nilsson turned in rounds of 72 and 77 for a 149 total and is tied for first with Shelly Martinez of UTSA for the individual lead. Nilsson won the event last year.
Lamar, the defending team champion, was in fourth place following a 313 in the morning round, but responded with the low score of the day in the second round, a 304 for a 617 total. UTSA is one shot back at 618. First round leader Illinois is in third after a 310-317--627.
Lina Nilsson-Balfe is tied for tenth at 81-73--154, Channing Norton is tied for 14th at 77-78--155, Linda Persson is tied for 30th at 83-76--159 and Fabienne Haremza is tied for 54th at 84-81--165.
Jannel Alexander is competing as an individual and is in 75th place with a 86-88--174 total.
The Lady Cardinals will be paired with UTSA and Illinois on Tuesday. The teams will begin the shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. on holes 1-3.
