Lamar Women Sweep Titles At Islander Spring Classic

Feb. 26, 2008

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Lamar women's golf team captured both the individual and team titles of the Islander Spring Classic at the Corpus Christi Country Club on Tuesday.

While the scores were higher than on Monday due to heavy winds, the Lady Cardinals shot a 318 Tuesday for a 54-hole total of 934 to edge Oral Roberts by three strokes.

Therese Nilsson shot a final-round 74 for a 228 total, forcing a playoff with teammate - and the leader after 36 holes - Channing Norton. Norton turned in an 81 Tuesday. On the first playoff hole Nilsson's five was good enough to claim the title - her fourth while at Lamar.

Lamar's other three competitors on the scoring team all shot 81 or 82. Linda Persson had an 82 to finish tied for 20th at 239, Lina Nilsson-Balfe also turned in an 82 to place in a tie for 22nd at 240 and Hillary Zeigler signed an 81 in the scoring tent for a 244 total, placing her in a tie for 37th.

After a pair of 78s to start the tournament, Bonnie Howard recorded an 86 for a 242 total to tie for 30th, while competing as an individual.

Lamar will return to action next Monday and Tuesday when it participates in the South Alabama Lady Jaguar Invitational in Mobile, Ala.
