KYLE - Linda Persson claimed medalist honors in a playoff and Lamar University won the team title in a tie-breaker over Sam Houston State following Tuesday's final round at the CenturyTel Bobcat Classic hosted by Texas State at Plum Creek Golf Club (Par-72, 6,063-yards). She birdied the 14th and 15th holes in posting the tournament's best round and helped the Lady Cardinals pull into a tie with Sam Houston. A freshman from Hollviken, Sweden, Persson won medalist honors on the first playoff hole. It was her first collegiate title since joining the Lady Cardinals in January. SHSU's Stefanie Page, who shared the 36-hole lead with teammate Mariana Villarreal, had a chance to win the individual title and help the Bearkats claim the team championship. She made a double-bogey the 18th hole and then lost to Persson on the first playoff hole. Mary Betancourt of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi finished third at 225. Lamar, who trailed Sam Houston by three stroke following Monday's first two rounds, posted a tournament-best 293 Tuesday for a 54-hole score of 305-305-293--903. SHSU closed with a 296 and tied with the Lady Cards at 903. TAMU-Corpus Christi was third in the seven-team field, followed by St. Edward's (931), McLennan CC and Texas State (945), and Tyler JC (1066).
Therese Nilsson, a sophomore from Vellinge, Sweden, fired a final round even-par 72 and placed fourth at 73-81-72--226. Hillary Zeigler shot a final round 75 and tied for sixth place at 80-73-75--228. Bonnie Howard, a junior from Carrollton, tied for 19th place at 76-78-82--236. Channing Norton, a sophomore from Cleveland, placed 22nd at 80-81-76--237. Lamar closes out the spring season at the 2007 Southland Conference Championship beginning Monday at Horseshoe Bay Resort on Lake LBJ in Austin. The event is a three-day, 54-hole tournament hosted by Texas State. The Lady Cardinals have won two straight SLC titles and three in the last four years (2003, 2005 and 2006). |
