MARICOPA, Ariz. - The Lamar Lady Cardinals golf team placed four in the overall top 13 as they finished the first day of the Cowgirl Classic third, only six strokes off the pace. Led by Wenny Chang's top-10 day-one finish, Lamar fired a 301-298 - 599 on the par 72 Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club course.

"Today was a very unique day," said head coach Brian White. "We started off in the middle of the pack, then slowly worked our way to the top, before falling back but we finished strong. I'm very proud of how we fought today to end the day in third. But as we have learned in our previous competitions, we have to close with another strong round tomorrow."

Freshman Wenny Chang led a group of four Lady Cardinals who posted a top-13 finish. Chang opened the day with a two-over 74, and closed out the day with a three-over par. Her two-round five-over score has Chang entering the final round in a three-way tie for 10th.

Chang's two-round score is just a stroke better than a trio of Lady Cardinals who fired a six-over par 150 Monday. Freshman Kelly Erasmus recorded the lowest round of the LU trio shooting a two-over 74 in the opening round but dropped two strokes in the second round. Classmate Bertille DuPont posted the exact opposite scorecard of Erasmus. Dupont finished the day with a 76-74.

Junior Nghi Ngo was the third Lady Cardinal involved in the three-way tie for 13th. Ngo struggled in the opening round carding a 77 before finishing the day with a one-over 73.

After nearly recording an individual title last time out, sophomore Taylor Stockton closed out the LU scorecard by posting a 77-79 - 156 to end the day tied for 46th.

The Lady Cardinals will look climb the ladder and win their second-straight team title when they return to the course Tuesday at 7:45 a.m.
