HOOVER, Ala. - The Lamar University women's golf team played its final competition before heading to next week's Southland Conference Championships, finishing third at the 2013 Samford Intercollegiate from Hoover Country Club.

Three Lady Cardinals finished among the top 10 as Lamar closed out play in the 54-hole event on Tuesday. After starting the final round just three strokes behind host Samford, Lamar closed with a team total of 316 for a three-round score of 936 (+72).

Louisiana-Monroe closed with a 303 to move into a tie for first place with Samford at 930 (+66). The Bulldogs won the title by edging ULM on the first playoff hole. Jacksonville State placed fourth in the 11-team tournament at 947 (+83) and West Florida was fifth at 948 (+84).

Senior Julie Aime and sophomore Nghi Ngo tied for sixth place in the 60-player field with 233 totals (+17). Aime opened with an 84 before posting rounds of 71 and 78, while Ngo shot rounds of 79-75-79. Both players have seven top 10 finishes on the year in 10 events.

ULM's Alison Knowles took home individual medalist honors with a three-shot win over Elin Olsson of West Florida. Knowles finished at 223 (+7) after rounds of 72-76-75 on the par-72, 6,271-yard course.

Lamar freshman Taylor Stockton continued her strong play with a ninth place tie. Stockton, who tied for eighth last week at the HBU Husky Invitational, shot three straight rounds of 78 for a 234 total to finish just one stroke behind Aime and Ngo.

Junior Katelyn McDougal gave the Lady Cardinals a top 20 finish as she placed 18th with a 238 total (+22) for 54 holes. McDougal closed the tournament with an 81 after carding rounds of 77 and 80 in Monday's opening two rounds.

Freshman Stina Resen, playing just her third tournament of the year for Lamar, stood alone in 32nd place with rounds of 82-84-82 for a 248 total (+32).

 

 

Junior Lauren Van Gerven played the event as an individual and finished 35th, four shots behind Resen after scores of 86-82-84.

The Lady Cardinals will look to improve on last year's third place finish at the Southland Conference Championships. This year's tournament begins Monday at Frisco Lakes Golf Course and will be played over three days.
