GERMANTOWN. Tenn. -
Lamar freshmen Bertille DuPont and Wenny Chang led the way on the first day of the season-opening FedEx Memphis Women's Intercollegiate Monday afternoon for the Lady Cardinal golf team. The duo fired a 10-over 152 on the par-71, 6,105-yard Ridgeway Country Club course. Lamar's freshman tandem enters Tuesday's final round tied for 14th overall. The Cardinals ended the day fourth overall just 11 strokes off the leaders.
Both Chang and Dupont struggled in the opening round of the tournament, and both showed poise battling back in the second round. After firing a 10-over 81 in the first round, Chang carded Lamar's best round of the day when she fired a 71 in the second. It was a similar story for Dupont, who battled back from an eight-over 79 in the first round to record the team's second-lowest round with a two-over 73.
Sophomore Taylor Stockton is only one stroke back of the freshmen. She opened the day with a five-over, 76, and closed out Monday with 77 in the final round. Stockton heads into the final round of action tied for 19th overall.
Junior Nghi Ngo is tied for 23rd overall after carding a 74-81 - 155. Senior Katelyn McDougal was unable to find her stroke throughout the day. She was 16-over par after the opening round, but was able to improve upon that in the second round. She is currently 51st overall with a 167.
The Lady Cardinals will tee off at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon for the final round of action. Lamar will be grouped with Sam Houston State and tournament-host Memphis.
