For the second time in as many weeks the Lamar Lady Cardinal golf team will take a lead into the final round of a tournament after firing 300-299 - 599 Monday at the ORU Shootout presented by the Bob Hurley Auto Family in Tulsa, Okla. The Lady Cardinals placed their top four golfers among the top 10, including sophomore Taylor Stockton and freshman Wenny Chang who enter Tuesday's final round tied for second on the par-71 Meadowbrook Country Club Course.
"I'm very impressed with how our ladies came out to play today," said head Brian White. "We had a slim one-stroke lead after the opening round, and we were able to gain some separation in the second round. It's nice to have a lead heading into the final round, but there are still 18 holes remaining to be played and we only need to look back to last week to know how important those final 18 holes are."
Lamar managed one-stroke lead after first 18 holes edging out Arkansas State, 300-301. The Lady Cardinals improved by a stroke in the second round while ASU struggle with a 309. LU enters the final round of 18 with an 11-stroke advantage.
Stockton opened the tournament with a four-over par 75, while Chang shot a 77. Chang came back to shoot two strokes better than Stockton in the second round to finish tied for second on the leaderboard (149). Lamar's duo is only a stroke back of UALR's Sofie Kuarnstrom for the overall lead.
Freshman Bertille DuPont and senior Katelyn McDougal also finished the day tied and among the leaderboard's top 10. DuPont carded a 74-77 - 151, while McDougal recorded a 75-76 - 151. Junior Nghi Ngo was the team's fifth overall finisher, but is still very much in the hunt after shooting a 76-78 - 154. Ngo is tied for 25th overall heading into the final day of action.
Lamar returns to the course Tuesday morning for the final round of 18 holes. The Lady Cardinals are slated to tee off at 8:30 a.m.
