HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Lamar women's golf team took the top-two individual spots at the 2013 Harold Funston Invitational but was unable to hold off the host school in the final round finishing second overall Tuesday afternoon (293-288-296 - 877). Freshman Wenny Chang won the individual title with a two-over par 215, beating out teammate Nghi Ngo (71-70-75) by one stroke.

Despite placing three golfers in the overall top 10, including the top-two finishers, and taking a three-stroke lead into the final day of competition, the Lady Cards were unable to hold off a surging Sam Houston State team. The Bearkats fired a round-best 290 Tuesday to beat out Lamar by six strokes claiming a three-stroke advantage for the tournament.

"Obviously, we are disappointed we didn't get the win," said head coach Brian White. "I thought we played well in all three rounds, and I really felt like we placed ourselves in a great position to win after the second round but we came up short. We are a young team, and there are growing pains that are associated with that. We will learn from this and get better.

"I thought Nghi played really well for us, probably her best tournament of the season. What more can you say about Wenny coming in as a freshman and winning the title," added White.

Freshman Bertille DuPont was the third Lady Cardinal to crack the top 10. She fired a three-over 74 in the final round to finish the tournament tied for night with a nine-over 222. Sophomore Taylor Stockton made a push for top-10 honors equaling DuPont's 74 in the final round but she finished just outside the top 10 with a 76-74-74 - 224 (T12th).

Senior Katelyn McDougal closed out the team's scorecard with a 235. She was able to erase the memory of an opening-round 83, by closing strong with a 74-78 in the final two rounds. McDougal closed out the tournament tied for 33rd with a 235.

After competing in four of the first five weeks of the season, the Lady Cardinals will get a well deserved rest before returning to action Monday, Oct. 21, for the Blue Raider Invitational in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
