Oct. 12, 2008

DAYTONA, Fla. -- Therese Nilsson shot a final round 71 to claim medalist honors at the LPGA International Xavier Invitational on the LPGA Legends Course on Sunday.

Nilsson held a two-stroke lead going into the final round and posted the only sub-par round of the day and just the third of the tournament en route to a three-stroke victory over Praewnapa Phol-uayporn of Florida Atlantic. Nilsson finished with a 54-hole total of 72-72-71--215 for a one-under-par score.

It was her fifth individual title as a Cardinal.

'As well as she strikes the ball she is a threat to win any tournament she enters,' Lamar head coach Brian White said. 'I was pleased that she hit the ball fantastic and maintained a calm attitude throughout the tournament.'

Nilsson's efforts helped pave the way for Lamar to post its lowest round of the fall for the second-consecutive day. Sunday's 299 was the second-lowest in the field and pushed Lamar to a 912 total and a fourth-place finish - its third top-five finish of the fall and second this week.

In fact, Lamar was the only group among the 15 team entries to produce scores of 300 or below each of the final two days.

Channing Norton tied for fifth overall at 222 following a 76 on Sunday.

Linda Persson shaved strokes off each day and posted a 73 in her final round, allowing her to tie for 30th at 83-77-73--233. Her 73 was tie for the fourth-lowest round all day.

Lina Nilsson-Balfe shot a 79 to finish tied for 54th at 244, while Jennel Alexander's 85 put her in 67th place at 251.

Lamar will return to action when it concludes its fall season at the Lady Colonel Collegiate at The Bridges Golf Club in Bay St. Louis, Miss., on Oct. 19-21.
