Coming off one of their strongest performances of the season, the Lamar Lady Cardinals golf team travels to Maricopa, Ariz., Monday for the Cowgirl Classic. Despite being played in Arizona, the tournament will be hosted by University of Wyoming.
The 20-team field will compete on the 6,231-yard, par-72 Ak Chin Southern Dunes Golf Course. The tournament field consists of host Wyoming, Boise State, BYU, Eastern Washington, Lamar, Montana, Montana State, Nevada, Northern Colorado, New Mexico State, Oral Roberts, Portland State, Sacramento State, Santa Clara, Seattle, Southern Utah, UTEP, Tulsa, Utah Valley and Weber State.
The tournament is slated to tee off at 7:45 a.m. with all teams playing 54 holes Monday, and closing with the final 18 holes Tuesday.
"This is our final tune-up before we head to the Southland Conference Championships," said head coach Brian White. "So this tournament is important for numerous reasons. After struggling at Augusta, I was very proud of our team rebounded last week to take the team title. They had to work hard on every hole and they got the job done. This is going to be a tremendous challenge for our ladies."
The Lady Cardinals are coming off one of their most impressive tournaments of the season last week at the Husky Classic in Sugar Land, Texas. Lamar entered the final round in a three-way tie for first play, but smoked the competition in the final round outpacing the other two teams in the hunt by seven strokes on the final day. Lamar finished the day with its top four players in the top 25, including three in the top 10. Sophomore Taylor Stockton was Lamar's top finisher recording a runner-up finish, missing the individual title by only three strokes.
Lamar enters the Cowgirl Classic with an opportunity to outdo the team's the win total from last season. With at least two tournaments remaining, the Lady Cardinals enter the tournament in Arizona with three team titles this season only one shy of last years haul. The 2012-13 Lady Cardinals closed out the season by picking up their fourth team title at the Southland Conference Championships.
Following the Cowgirl Classic, Lamar will have six days to prepare for the 2014 Southland Conference Championships. The conference championships will be held Tuesday, April 15 through Thursday, April 17th at the High Meadow Ranch Golf Club in Magnolia, Texas.
