Four Lamar Golfers Named All-Southland Conference

FRISCO, Texas - Four members of the Lamar women's golf team were named to the All-Southland Conference team as released by the league office on Thursday. Senior Hillary Zeigler and junior Therese Nilsson were both named to the first team, sophomore Linda Persson to the second team and junior Channing Norton was among the ten student-athletes on the honorable mention list. It marks the second time two Lady Cardinals have been named first team since the league began awarding all-conference teams six years ago. Zeigler finished the season second on the team with a 76.95 stroke average over 20 rounds. The Livingston, Texas native finished in fourth place at the SLC Championship and six top-10 finishes. She was also named to the first team in 2005-06, with second team plaudits each of the past two years. Nilsson, who is from Vellinge, Sweden, posted a a 76.08 scoring average and five top-10 finishes, including a pair of individual titles at the Islander Spring Classic and the Lamar/Sam Houston State Spring Invitational. She was named the SLC Freshman of the Year in 2005-06 and Player of the Year last season. She becomes just the fourth player in league history to earn three first team accolades, joining Raman Saran of Sam Houston State, Lisa Westman of McNeese State and current Lamar assistant coach Casey Cain. Persson nabbed second team honors for the second-consecutive year after posting a 77.24 stroke average in 25 rounds. She had four top-10 finishes and was a season-best second at the LPGA International Xavier Invitational in the fall and the Claude Jacobs Intercollegiate four weeks ago.
Norton earned honorable mention all-conference honors for the first time in her career. She recorded a pair of top-10 finishes and tied for first with Nilsson at the Islander Spring Classic. She competed in 22 rounds and turned in a 79.22 average. Central Arkansas' Nicole Forshner was named Player of the Year, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Ashley Watkins Newcomer of the Year, Texas State's Linn Gustafsson Freshman of the Year and Texas State's Mike Akers Coach of the Year. |
