Nilsson Named Capital One Bank/Southland Conference Women's Golf Student-Athlete of the Year

May 27, 2009

FRISCO, Texas - Lamar senior Therese Nilsson was named the Capital One Bank/Southland Conference Women's Golf Student-Athlete of the Year, the league office announced Tuesday in conjunction with the release of the All-Academic Women's Golf Teams.

Nilsson, a native of Vellinge, Sweden, is an exercise science major with a 3.39 grade-point average (GPA). A four-year golfer for Lamar, Nilsson ends her collegiate career as the only player in Southland history selected to the women's golf all-conference first-team in four consecutive seasons.

In the 2008-09 season, Nilsson led the Cardinals with a 76.89 stroke average and five top-10 finishes with one tournament title. Nilsson joins former Lamar women's golfer Casey Cain and Sam Houston State standout Jennifer Heinz as the only student-athletes selected to three golf all-academic teams.

Since the inception of the student-athlete of the year award in the 2002-03 season, Lamar has received three of the seven awards given, and its 16 all-academic selections make up nearly half of the 40 golfers selected in the eight years of league academic honorees.

Joining Nilsson on the all-academic team is McNeese State senior Maggie Welch, Lamar senior Channing Norton, Texas State sophomore Trine Mortensen and Central Arkansas junior Rebecca Sorensen.

Welch, a senior from Syracuse, Kansas, was an automatic selection to the all-academic team after receiving first-team all-conference merits. A finance major, Welch carries a 3.72 GPA and led the Cowgirls with a 77.20 stroke average placing in the top-10 in two tournaments.

Norton, a finance major with a 3.73 GPA, makes her first all-academic team appearance. A native of Cleveland, Texas, Norton was a second-team all-conference selection after notching her second-straight top-20 finish at the Southland Conference Championship. She posted a career-low 77.62 scoring average in the 2008-09 season with four top-10 finishes.

Mortensen, a native of Silkeborg, Denmark, has the highest GPA (3.84) among all the golf all-academic team members. An accounting major, Mortensen is a three-time selection to the Texas State Dean's List. Competing in all nine events for the Bobcats this season, Mortensen compiled a 79.20 stroke average and recorded two top-10 finishes.

Sorensen, a second-team all-conference selection, is a psychology major with a 3.45 GPA. A native of Grabo, Sweden, Sorensen was second on the team with a 77.30 stroke average, had two top-three finishes and tied the Southland tournament record with a 70 on the final day. A five-time Dean's List recipient, Sorensen's GPA is the top mark among all UCA's men's and women's golfers.

The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 12 member schools, voted for the student-athlete of the year. The student-athlete of the year award is presented to the one male and one female student-athlete who achieve excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and demonstrated achievement in athletics for at least two years at the nominating institution.

The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each Southland university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.

Included in Capital One Bank's support of the Southland Conference Academic Awards Program is the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship, the All-Academic Teams, the Student-Athlete of the Year, the Scholar-Athlete Award and the Commissioner's Honor Roll.
