NATCHITOCHES, La. - Junior Aline Pugliesi scored the first-ever goal in Lamar University soccer history, but the Lady Cardinals dropped their second game of the Holiday Inn Express Classic, which was hosted by Northwestern State, 11-1 to South Alabama Sunday afternoon at the NSU Soccer Complex.

Lamar (0-4) remains on the road next weekend at the Four Points Sheraton Culver City Classic hosted by Loyola-Marymount. The Lady Cardinals will play host LMU Friday at 6 p.m. (CST) and Oregon State Sunday at 1 p.m. (CST).

Pugliesi, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, netted Lamar's first goal of the season in the 63rd minute of play on a nice pass from Stefani Turner. Pugliesi was named to the Holiday Inn Express Classic All-Tournament team. The

USA (3-1) scored in the fifth minute of the game on a goal by Carly Williams with Liz Clark and Tiara Smith getting assists. The Lady Jaguars went on to score four more times in the opening half to take a 5-0 lead at intermission. USA added six more goals in the second half.

Michelle Leppert had four assists and one goal for the Lady Jaguars, while Smith scored three goals with one assist. Williams scored two goals and picked up an assist. Clark added a goal to her assist on the first goal of the game, and Laura Hosford, Sunny Haaland and Ashley Vaughn each added a goal.

Lady Cardinals took 11 shots, three of which were on goal. Beth Squires had a team-high four shots, including one on goal, to lead Lamar. Pugliesi added three shots and Erin Binagia had two shots, including one on goal. USA had 33 shots with 24 being on goal.

Lauren Ludwig started in goal for the Lady Cardinals and made 10 saves. Lamar committed five fouls compared to 10 by USA.

 

 

North Texas (4-0) posted a 2-1 win over host Northwestern State to win the Holiday Inn Express Classic. The Demons (2-2) beat USA 2-1 Friday night.
