Lamar Falls To Tough UTSA Squad 2-0 In Southland Opener
Oct. 3, 2008
UTSA scored a pair of goals on corner kicks including one in the final two minutes to earn a 2-0 win over Lamar in the Southland Conference opener for both schools at Cardinal Stadium on Friday. UTSA (4-7, 1-0 SLC) outshot Lamar 23-11 while putting 12 shots on goal. Lamar's (2-6, 0-1 SLC) 11 shots were its second-highest total this year and the five corner kicks were the most all season. The Roadrunners got on the board in the first half when Kari Weiland's corner kick attempt bounced off Lamar's Ericka Predmore and into an open spot at the top of the penalty box. That's where Allison Dillon gave UTSA its first goal and her third of the season at the 24:23 mark. That's the way it stood through the end of the period and nearly the remainder of the game when the Roadrunners scored off a corner kick with 93 seconds left. Weiland sent a ball in from the right corner (as your face the goal) where Kim Gonzales tapped it to Jenny Munoz who scored before the Lamar defenders could block the shot. For Munoz it was her first goal of the season. Lamar did have its chances to tie the game, including a header by Jillian Lindsey off a corner in the 83rd minute that was saved by Nicoline Joergensen. Joergensen finished with five saves. At the other end of the field, Jennifer Gibbs made a career-high nine saves, including two or three on 1v1s high in the box. "Jenn Gibbs played a great game and made some terrific stops," LU head coach Dewi Hardman commented. Aline Pugliesi led LU with three shots and one on goal. Rachelle Barry, Lisa Hance, Stefani Turner and Lindsey also had a shot on goal.
"We had a couple of great chances," Hardman said. "We did a good job of creating and I would have to say its our best performance this year. "It was a very, very competitive game. (UTSA) cleared one off the line when we were challenging with seven minutes left and that kept it a one-goal game (at the time)." The energetic crowd of 380 was the second-largest in program history and did not go un-noticed by Hardman. "It was a good attendance and we appreciate the fans coming out," Hardman added. Lamar will face Texas State (4-3-3, 0-0-1 SLC) at Cardinal Stadium on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Bobcats tied McNeese State 2-2 in Lake Charles on Friday. |
