BEAUMONT - Kari Melancon and Aline Pugliesi each had three shots for Lamar University, but the Lady Cardinals were on the short end of a hard-fought 3-0 decision to Northwestern State in Southland Conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium.

Lamar (0-10-0) closes out its three-game home stand Friday when the Nebraska Cornhuskers visit Cardinal Stadium for a 5 p.m. game. The Lady Cardinals return to SLC action next Sunday with a 1 p.m. game at McNeese State.

Lamar continues to show improvement from game-to-game. The Lady Cardinals had 10 shots, including five on goal, and those shots came from five different players. Northwestern State (8-3-1) had 28 shots, including 13 on goal.

"We were in the game all the way to the end and that's all you can ask for," said Lamar coach Matthew Dillon. "We are starting to get some more offense, now we just need to find the back of the net. We are getting better every game and that's what you want to see. We're getting there."

The Lady Demons' Kayce Schultz scored the games first goal in the 13th minute. She had a sliding kick in off a centering pass from Chelsey Gibbs. Erin Hebert also picked up an assist on the play. The score remained 1-0 until intermission.

Natalie Waguespack made the score 2-0 with 52:38 left in the game. On a corner kick, Waguespack kicked the ball to Hannah Casey, who passed it back to Waguespack. Waguespack fired a 20-foot shot from the front, left side of the box that just slid in past the left post.

Hebert, who leads the SLC in goals scored, netted her ninth of the season to close out the scoring. Northwestern State fired a barrage of shots at the Lamar goal with goalkeeper Kelsie Binetti stopping Rose Lawrence's initial shot. Hebert booted the rebound, which was stopped by Erika Predmore at the goal line. Hebert scored on the rebound of her own shot to make the score 3-0.

"Kelsie (Binetti) is playing big for us right now and made some really good saves today," said Dillon of his freshman goalkeeper, who made eight saves.

Melancon and Pugliesi each had one shot on goal. Stefani Turner had two shots, one of which was on goal, and Predmore and Carrie Mrazek each had one shot on goal for the Lady Cardinals.
