Lamar Scores Goal, But Still Loses to Nicholls State, 4-1
Oct. 21, 2007 THIBODAUX, La. - Junior Kari Melancon scored Lamar University's second goal of the season, but it was not enough as the Lady Cardinals fell to Nicholls State, 4-1, Sunday afternoon in Southland Conference women's soccer action. Lamar dropped to 0-14 overall and 0-5 in SLC play. Nicholls State improved to 2-14-1 overall and 1-5 in SLC play. The Lady Cardinals return home to host Sam Houston State Friday at 7 p.m. in Cardinal Stadium. The Lady Colonels jumped out to a 2-0 lead at intermission. Jessica Schwartz put Nicholls State on the board with a goal at 12:26 with Alicia Gautreau assisting. That same combination hooked up again for the Lady Colonels second goal, but this time Gautreau found the back of the net and Schwartz getting the assist. Gillian McCarter gave Nicholls a 3-0 lead in the 65th minute on an assist from Jessica Bedford. Melancon, a Nederland native, put Lamar on the board with a goal at 68:29. Aline Pugliesi, who has the teams only other goal, assisted on Melancon's tally. Gautreau closed out the scoring with her second goal of the game at 85:14 with Allison Flynn getting credit for an assist. Lamar out shot Nicholls 16 to 15, but the Lady Colonels held the edge in shots on goal, 9-7. The Lady Colonels attempted six corner kicks compared to five by the Lady Cardinals. Lamar committed four fouls while Nicholls was whistled for 16. Kelsie Binetti, a freshman from Lumberton, was back in goal for the Lady Cardinals and made five saves while allowing four goals. She missed Friday's game with a minor injury. Molly Mersereau made six saves for the Lady Colonels.
