NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Entering the final weekend of play the Lamar soccer team knew it wasn't going to qualify for the Southland Conference Tournament. But that didn't stop the Cardinals from putting a scare into Stephen F. Austin before falling 1-0 at the SFA Soccer Complex on Friday night.
The game was a scoreless tie through the opening 45 minutes before the Ladyjacks scored the only goal necessary in the 60th minute.
SFA's Amanda Alders took a pass from Brooke Kocian and dribbled towards the goal and found the back of the net with 30:45 remaining in the game. Lamar (3-11-1, 1-6-1 Southland) was unable to tie the game, managing two shots in the contest.
The Cardinals had one of their best chances to tie the game a few minutes later but just missed on a solid exchange from Lisa Hance to Brittany Holmes after Hance took a pass from Carrie Mrazek to start the attack. Aline Pugliesi and Holmes registered the only shots for LU in the game and both were on goal.
Jessica Winters made her fifth start of the season and made nine saves in goal
"With nothing to play for I am proud of the fight and determination we showed," head coach Dewi Hardman said. "SFA was playing for a spot in the tournament and had that emotion and adrenaline."
The Cardinals will conclude their second season of play on Sunday at Sam Houston State. Kickoff at Pritchett Field in Huntsville is set for 1 p.m.
