Soccer Season Comes To A Close Following Loss At Southeastern La.
Nov. 1, 2009
HAMMOND, La. -- Lamar entered the final day of the regular-season with a mathematical chance at qualifying for the Southland Conference Tournament but saw its hopes dashed in a 4-0 loss at Southeastern Louisiana at the Southeastern Soccer Complex Sunday. Despite missing out on the six-team tourney, Lamar (4-13-1, 3-6 SLC) ends its third season of intercollegiate soccer with a great deal of momentum and excitement in anticipation of what lies ahead for a team with zero seniors on its roster. "We were asking a lot of the team to win two on the road (this weekend)," said Lamar head coach Dewi Hardman. "The real thing is we let it get away from us earlier in the (conference) season. "It was our second game and (Southeastern's) first of the weekend so that may have had an impact, but don't get me wrong, there is a reason why they are second in the conference." The first goal of the match was set up by a strong attack from SLU and a fine defensive effort by Lamar. With just under seven minutes gone by, Karly Dagys beat Lamar goalkeeper Jennifer Gibbs but her shot was blocked by a Lamar defender. The rebound fell at the feet of Maiya Cooper, but her shot attempt also was knocked away by a Lady Cardinal back, though it did set up a corner kick for Southeastern that Gloria Burkhart played to the back side where Candice Wallace headed it in for a 1-0 Southeastern lead. Southeastern doubled its lead in the 10th minute. After a Lamar foul near midfield, Kyle MacIntosh sent a free kick that was run down by Oney. Oney sent a pass to a charging Dana Mayer from the back and Mayer found Burkhart, who charged in and got a shot past Gibbs for a 2-0 lead that the Lady Lions would maintain until halftime. SLU added its third score 15 minutes into the second half that Nicole Brannigan's initial attempt was run down by Dagys, who finished it for the 3-0 lead. That score came seven minutes after Gibbs recorded a save of a penalty kick taken by Natalie Santana.
Dagys capped the scoring in the 81st minute when she received a long-ball over the LU defense and slipped it past Gibbs. Lamar took 10 shots in the game with four on goal. Lisa Hance, Lorna Gover, Julie Niess and Lisa Topping all had one shot on goal, while Gover took three total attempts to lead the Lady Cards. Gibbs made four saves to bring her two-year career total to 151, moving her past Kelsie Binetti into first place on the school's all-time saves list. |
