BEAUMONT - Lamar University soccer signed 14 girls, including seven coming from local high schools, as the foundation of the school's first-ever women's soccer program, announced first-year coach Matthew Dillon. The Lady Cardinals will begin competitive play this fall with an 18-game schedule.
The signees include Haley Addison and Heather Broussard of Port Neches-Groves HS; Kelsie Binetti and Toree Plaia of Lumberton HS; Mindy Gremillion, Kari Melancon and Lauren Messick of Nederland HS; Jillian Lindsey of Edmonds Woodway (Wash.) HS; Lauren Ludwig of FB Austin HS; Staci McGuire of Granbury HS; Carrie Mrazek and Lauren Peterson of CC Ray HS; Brittany Ross of Creekview HS; and Stefani Turner of CC Carroll HS.
"It's always a great feeling to announce a signing class," said Dillon. "This being my very first group of student-athletes here at Lamar makes this even more exciting. I am honored to welcome each of them to the program and I look forward to working with them beginning in August.
"I am not finished recruiting as there are a number of prospects that I am still talking with. Over the next month or so, I will be announcing more members to the team. This is an exciting time to be part of Lamar University soccer."
Addison, who will be a sophomore for the Lady Cardinals, was a four-year letterwinner at PNG. She earned first-team all-district honors, all-region and academic all-state as a senior after tallying 15 assists. She was named first-team all-district as a junior and was a second-team selection as a sophomore. She was academic all-district all four years.
PNG went to the playoffs all four years. She helped the Lady Indians claim a district co-championship as a senior and win the bi-district championship. She scored the winning goal on a penalty kick to give PNG the bi-district championship her junior season. She played on the Lamar University, Gulf Coast and Spindletop Select club teams.
Binetti is a four-year varsity letterwinner and is team captain for the second straight year for the Lady Raiders. She earned first-team all-district honors in 2006, was named district keeper of the year in 2005 and was district newcomer of the year in 2004. She also plays for the Spindletop club team.
Broussard, who will be a sophomore for the Lady Cardinals, was a three-year letterwinner at PNG. She earned all-district and all-tournament honors during her prep career. She played for the Lamar University club team.
Gremillion, who will be a sophomore for the Lady Cardinals, was a four-year letterwinner at Nederland. She helped the Lady Bulldogs win four straight district championships and advance to the playoffs all four years. She earned first-team all-district honors in 2005 and was a second-team selection in 2004.
Lindsey is a two-year letterwinner for Edmonds Woodway HS. She was named team MVP in 2005 and was named first-team all-WESCO South. She played club soccer for the NWN Fusion, helping the team with the state championship in 2000, 2002 and 2005. They were also the 2002 USYSA Region VI champions.
Ludwig, a four-year letterwinner, helped Stephen F. Austin HS win the district championship in 2005 and 2006, and advance to the finals of the Region III Class 5-A playoffs. She was named all-district at goalkeeper in 2005 and 2006.
A four-year letterwinner at Granbury HS, McGuire is the team captain for the second straight year. She earned first-team all-district honors as a midfielder in 2006, and was a second-team selection in 2005 and 2004. She was named district co-defensive MVP in 2006. She was named to the all-tournament team at the West Texas Invitational in 2005 and 2006.
McGuire plays club soccer for the DFW Tornados. She helped DFW win the Plano Division I championship, the Fort Worth United Classic Tournament championship and the Texas Cup Under-19 Girls championship.
Melancon, who will be a junior for the Lady Cardinals, was a four-year letterwinner for Nederland and was a four-time academic all-district selection. She earned first-team all-district three times and was named offensive MVP in 2003 and 2004. She helped Nederland reach the Region III area finals in 2002, 2004 and 2005, and was a Region III area semifinalist in 2003. She played for the Gulf Coast and Spindletop Select club teams.
Messick, who has played defender, midfielder and forward, was a four-year letterwinner at Nederland HS from 2002-05. She was a four-time first-team all-district selection and was named district MVP in 2005. She named to the TASCO all-region team and was selected to play in the TASCO Senior Showcase. Messick, who will be a junior for the Lady Cardinals this fall, played for the Lamar Club Team in 2006.
Mrazek is a four-year letterwinner at Ray HS and is a three-time all-district performer (2004-06). Scored 17 goals and had 26 assists last season and was named district Co-MVP. She also plays for the Express 89 club team, helping them win the Houston Labor Day Cup in 2003 and 2004, and the Austin Labor Day Cup in 2005.
A four-year letterwinner and current team captain at Ray HS, Peterson is a three-time all-district performer, including earning second-team honors in 2005 as a defender and first-team honors as a midfielder in 2006. She was also district Co-MVP in 2006. She also plays for the Express 89 club team, helping them win the Houston Labor Day Cup in 2003 and 2004, and the Austin Labor Day Cup in 2005.
Plaia, who will be a sophomore for the Lady Cardinals, was a four-year letterwinner at Lumberton HS. She helped the Lady Raiders win the 2003 and 2005 district championship and advance to the bi-district round of the playoffs in 2004 and 2006. As a senior, scored 36 goals and had 15 assists. She was named first-team all-district, offensive player of the year, academic all-district and Beaumont Enterprise Super Gold Team.
As a junior, she was named first-team all-district after scoring 23 goals with 16 assists. As a sophomore, was named first-team all-district, offensive player of the year, Gatorade player of the year and Beaumont Enterprise Super Gold Team after scoring 43 goals with 19 assists. She scored 16 goals with three assists as a freshman to earn first-team all-district and was named Gatorade rookie of the year.
Ross is a three-year letterwinner at Creekview HS and serves as the team captain this year. She helped Creekview advance to the Class 5A state finals last season and was named second-team all-district. She helped Creekview reach the Class 5A regional semifinals in 2005. She plays for the DFW Tornados club team, helping them win the 2006 Under-19 Texas Cup championship.
A four-year letterwinner, Turner helped Carroll HS win the district championship in 2004 and 2006 and to a runner-up finish in 2005. Turner scored 21 goals and had 12 assists as a freshman, 16 goals and 11 assists as a sophomore and 21 goals last year as a junior.
Turner was named first-team all-district in 2005 and 2006 and was named first-team All-South Texas in 2004 and 2006. She was named district newcomer of the year and All-South Texas newcomer of the year in 2004. She was named to the all-tournament team at the Brenham Tournament and the Gulf Coast Classic. She also plays for the Express 89 club team.
