BEAUMONT, Texas – The biggest home schedule and the longest homestand in program history highlight the 19-game 2014 Lamar University women’s soccer schedule announced today.
The Lady Cardinals will play 11 home games in 2014, eclipsing the previous high of nine home games in 2010. In addition, Lamar will play five consecutive non-conference home games between Aug. 29 and Sept. 12. The Lady Cardinals have never had more than a four-game homestand in the past.
In addition, the Lady Cardinals will host the Southland Conference Tournament, set for Nov. 6-9.
“We love playing at home,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “We get great support home, especially on Friday nights. That’s something we want to keep going.”
Eight of Lamar’s home games are set for 7 p.m. starts on Fridays. The other three home games are slated to start at 1 p.m. Sundays.
The Lady Cardinals open the season with a two-game trip to California. Lamar is at San Jose State on Aug. 22 and at Cal Poly on Aug. 24.
“California is a big recruiting base for us,” Cervantes said. “It’s also a homecoming for me. San Jose State is my alma mater and I was an assistant coach at Cal Poly.”
The Lady Cardinals open a five-game homestand after returning from the West Coast by hosting Rice at 7 p.m. Aug. 29. Other teams on the homestand include North Texas, Texas State, Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern.
“I think it’s a good non-conference home schedule,” Cervantes said. “We’ve got some very good teams coming in. That will help us get ready for our conference schedule.”
Lamar opens Southland Conference play by hosting Northwestern State at 7 p.m. Sept. 19. Nicholls, Southeastern Louisiana and McNeese State also visit the Lamar Soccer Complex this season. The Lady Cardinals close out the regular season by hosting Central Arkansas at 7 p.m. Oct. 31.
Lamar will host the Southland Conference Tournament for the first time in program history. The six-team event has games on Nov. 6, Nov. 7 and Nov. 9.
“I think the tournament will be good for Lamar and Beaumont,” Cervantes said. “We are excited to show off our facilities.”
Lamar went 7-10-2 overall last season, just missing the conference tournament with a 4-6-2 mark after advancing to the championship game the year before.
“We definitely want to be playing in the tournament on our home field,” Cervantes said. “That’s definitely our goal.”
