BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University women's team is picked to finish second in the Southland Conference in polls of the league's coaches and sports information directors, the conference announced today.

The Lady Cardinals posted the best record in their five-year history last season, going 9-8-2 overall and placing third in the conference with a 6-2-1 record. Lamar returns eight starters from last year's squad.

"It shows that the girls are being recognized for their efforts," first-year Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. "We were talking about getting respect. We've gotten that respect, now we have to prove that we deserve it."

Stephen F. Austin, which went 9-0 in the conference last season, was picked to win the regular-season title in both polls.

Defender Amber Thornhill (Katy, Texas) is Lamar's representative on the first-team of the all-conference squad. The junior out of Morton Ranch High School was a second-team selection on last season's all-conference team. She started all 19 games as a sophomore for the Lady Cardinals, collecting four points on one goal and two assists.

The Lady Cardinals had a pair of second-team selections on this year's preseason all-conference squad, as senior forward Lorna Maudslay (York, England) and sophomore midfielder Kristin Bos (Valencia, Calif.) were honored. Maudslay had nine points on three goals and three assists as a junior last season, while Bos was a second-team all-conference selection as a freshman after notching 15 points on five goals and five assists. Bos tied a school record with seven points (two goals and three assists) in an 11-0 win over Texas Southern on Sept. 18.

"We definitely have some talent here," Cervantes said. "I think the conference has improved, and we definitely have our work cut out for us."

Lamar opens the regular season at Air Force on Aug. 17. The home opener is set for 7 p.m. Sept. 7 vs. Prairie View A&M. The Lady Cardinals open Southland Conference play at McNeese State on Sept. 28, with the first conference home game set for 1 p.m. Sept. 30 against Nicholls.
