BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women’s soccer team enters its final week of preparation prior to Friday’s 7 p.m. season opener against Prairie View A&M at the Lamar Soccer Complex.

“We’re looking good right now,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “I’ve been pleased with what I’ve seen so far.”

The 25-player roster is the largest in recent memory for the Cardinals. This season’s squad includes nine players who have yet to experience any game action on the collegiate level. Cervantes is making sure those players are not only ready to play, but that they fit in with the returning players.

Lamar Falls to Host Northern Arizona, 7-0
Wrapping up its first weekend of play as a NCAA Division I program, the Lamar University soccer team lost 7-0 Sunday afternoon to host Northern Arizona in the final game of the Hilton Garden Inn Mountain Classic.

“We’re doing a lot of team-building exercises,” Cervantes said. “This is a great group of student-athletes, and they all seem to be getting along.”

The Cardinals are coming off their best season ever, posting an 11-9-1 overall record, and finishing second in the Southland Conference with a 6-2 mark. Lamar returns its top four scorers from last season, led by Kimmy Albeno (12 G, 3 A, 27 Pts.) and Kristin Bos (11-4-26). Goalkeeper Bailey Fontenot, who set Lamar records for wins (11), goals-against average (1.18) and save percentage (.844) has looked sharp so far at practice.

“I think we’re eager to start the season,” Cervantes said. “We’d love to have a great crowd on hand for Friday’s game.”

Following Friday’s game, Lamar will travel to Northern Arizona for a game at 1 p.m. Sunday that will be televised on Fox Sports Arizona.

“We have two tough games to open the season,” Cervantes said. “Prairie View is picked to win the SWAC, and Northern Arizona is always tough, especially at their place because of the altitude. These will be a good test for us.”
