Lamar Tabbed 10th In SLC Preseason Polls

Aug. 21, 2008

FRISCO, Texas - Not much has changed in Southland Conference soccer from the conclusion of the 2007 season. McNeese State and Stephen F. Austin shared the regular-season championship and are picked, along with UTSA, as the top three teams in the 2008 preseason polls.

The coaches and SID polls are a good indication of how tight competition will be in the SLC for the coming 2008 season. Each poll is divided among the top three choices with McNeese State edging Stephen F. Austin by one point in the coaches poll. Each team received five first-place votes. UTSA was third.

In the SID poll, Stephen F. Ausitn was a 10-point preseason favorite in front of UTSA, which received one first-place vote. McNeese State was picked third by league SIDs, which also awarded a first-place vote to Texas State, which was slated sixth in the overall rankings.

UTSA will aim to finish the job that fell just out of reach in 2007 as the Runners finished one game behind McNeese State and Stephen F. Austin.

Finishing in the top half of the conference standings for a sixth consecutive season and looking to move up, the Northwestern State Lady Demons claim the fourth spot in each poll racking up more than 50 points in each poll.

Southeastern Louisiana edged Texas State for the fifth spot in both polls. Central Arkansas, Sam Houston State, Nicholls State and Lamar round out the final spots in each poll. The Sugar Bears received 35 points in the coaches poll and 37 from the SIDs. The Bearkats polls pulled in 26 points in both polls while the Lady Colonels and Lady Cardinals are offset by one point in each poll.
