BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women’s soccer team looks for its first win of the season when it travels to Baton Rouge, La., for a non-conference game at Southern at 7 p.m. Friday.
Lamar (0-2) opened the season last weekend with a 3-0 loss at Air Force and a 3-1 loss at Wyoming.
“We played two tough teams to open the season,” first-year Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “We made some mistakes that cost us, but hopefully, we will learn from those mistakes.
Cervantes was pleased with the play of his freshmen, especially defender Megan Campbell, who notched first career goal, and midfielder/forward Jannet Hernandez.
Friday’s game will be the first of the season for Southern, which was 5-10-1 last season. The teams met at Lamar last season, with the Lady Cardinals coming away with a 4-0 victory.
“I really don’t know what they have or what their tendencies are because I don’t have any video of them,” Cervantes said of Southern. “We just have to play the way we are capable of. We’ve had two good days of practice, and I think that will carry over into the game.”
Friday’s game is the third of five straight games away from Lamar to open the season for the Lady Cardinals. Lamar will be at the UTSA Tournament the following weekend before opening the home season at 7 p.m. Sept. 7 vs. Prairie View A&M.
Season tickets for the Lady Cardinals are available for just $25. For ticket information, visit LamarCardinals.com, or call (409) 880-1715.
