Soccer edges Oral Roberts in overtime
- Jannet Hernandez scored on a penalty kick just 58 seconds into overtime to lift Lamar to a 2-1 victory over host Oral Roberts in a Southland Conference women's soccer game Friday night.

The Cardinals are led offensively by junior Kimmy Albeno, the all-time leading scorer in program history. Albeno has 11 points on five goals and one assist this season, as she moved into the top spot for career points with 51 and goals with 22.

Jennifer Yacuta is second on the team with nine points on four goals and one assist, while Jannet Hernandez is third with eight points on three goals and two assists.

Lamar leads the overall series against Northwestern State 3-2-1, winning the last two meetings, including a 1-0 victory at Lamar last season behind the goalkeeping of Bailey Fontenot, who made 11 saves. Kristin Bos scored the game-winner for Lamar.

The Cardinals are 1-1 all-time against Oral Roberts, including last season's 1-0 overtime win as Hernandez scored on a penalty kick just 58 seconds into the extra session.

Lamar looks to snap a two-game skid. The Cardinals dropped a 5-3 decision at Rice on Friday before falling to UMass by a 2-1 score in double overtime on Sunday in Tomball, Texas.

"We've had a good week of practice," Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. "We have to get better.  We don't have time to mess around."

Northwestern State (2-5, 0-0) comes in off a 3-0 win over Prairie View A&M on Sunday. Brooke Eastburg leads the Lady Demons with two goals.

Oral Roberts is 5-2 overall heading into Friday's conference opener at Stephen F. Austin. The Golden Eagles, who are coming off a 3-2 overtime loss to Arkansas State, are led by Jennifer Abernathy, who has 15 points on five goals and five assists.

Sunday's game against Oral Roberts is Military Appreciation Day, with active and retired military personnel receiving free admission by wearing their military uniform or by presenting valid military identification at the ticket office on game day.

Sunday's contest is the first of a three-game homestand, Lamar's longest of the season. The Cardinals host Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m. Sept. 27 and Houston Baptist at 1 p.m. Sept. 29.

For ticket information, call (409) 880-1715, or visit www.LamarCardinals.com. Tickets are available at the Montagne Center ticket office during regular business hours or at the Lamar Soccer Complex one hour prior to game time.
