A little after 7 a.m. Tuesday morning, the Lamar soccer team and coaches laced-up their cleats and hit the field for practice.
But this wasn't just any practice. It was the first on the pitch of the state-of-the-art Lamar Soccer Complex, which will make its debut this weekend with the inaugural Lamar Soccer Classic.
"We are very excited to say the least," head coach Dewi Hardman said. "Its a great facility and it held up very well through all of the rain the past couple of weeks."
Lamar will play host to Grambling State, New Mexico State and Northwestern State with doubleheaders on Friday and Sunday.
"We are very excited to be hosting three quality teams this weekend as we open our multi-million dollar facility," Hardman added.
The $3.7 million complex features the natural grass playing surface, bleacher seating for 500 with addition space available along the sidelines, and the large locker room/office building adjacent to the field.
Grambling and Northwestern State will kick things off on Friday at 4:30 p.m., with Lamar and NMSU meeting at 7 p.m. Sunday's first game between NMSU and Northwestern State will begin at 11:30 a.m. before Lamar and Grambling square off at 2 p.m.
