BEAUMONT, Texas -
Senior goalkeeper Jennifer Gibbs and freshman defender Nicole Frank of the Lamar University women's soccer team were honored as players of the week by the Southland Conference on Tuesday.
Gibbs (Rowlett, Texas) was named Goalkeeper of the Week after posting a pair of shutout wins as the Lady Cardinals claimed 1-0 road victories over Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls. Gibbs collected 10 saves over the two games, and has a school-record six shutouts this season.
Frank (Riverside, Calif.) was named Defensive Player of the Week after playing all 180 minutes over the weekend, anchoring a Lamar defense that handed Southeastern Louisiana, which entered the game as the nation's top-scoring offense, its first shutout of the season.
"It's great to have two players recognized by the conference," Lamar coach Dewi Hardman said. "Jennifer has been a big part of our program for four years, and is having a tremendous season.
"Nicole is making major contributions as a freshman, and that speaks well for the future of our program."
Lamar (6-5-1 overall, 3-0-0 conference) set a school record for wins in a season with the victory over Nicholls. The Lady Cardinals open the home portion of their Southland schedule with a pair of games this weekend. Lamar entertains Sam Houston State (5-8-1, 1-2-0) at 7 p.m. Friday and league-leading Stephen F. Austin (9-2-1, 4-0-0) at 1 p.m. Sunday.
"This is a big weekend for us," Hardman said. "Sam Houston is a big rival of ours, and they've always played us tough. We know the Stephen F. Austin game could be for first place, but we have to keep our focus on Sam Houston State right now."
