Lamar junior Erin Binagia was named to the College Sports Information Director's of America ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI Women's Soccer Team on Friday.
The defender from Nederland, Texas, made history in becoming the first player in program history to achieve such an honor. She was one of just 12 defenders named to the three teams from Division I schools in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
Binagia, who was named to the second team with a 4.0 grade point average in exercise science, has appeared in 41 career games and is one of four three-year letterwinners at Lamar since the program began in 2007
She is a two-time member of the Southland Conference Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll and a four-time President's List honoree. Binagia is one of three players on the Lady Cardinals' team to receive the prestigious Mirabeau Scholarship by Lamar.
Binagia graduated from Nederland High School where she was a first team all-district 20-4A selection. She was also named to the academic all-state team before becoming the valedictorian of her graduating class.
A total of seven players from SLC schools were named to the 37-member list. Binagia was one of just two defenders from the league among the district teams.
The Academic All-America Teams program honors male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, a 2,000-member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 (on a scale of 4.00), have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
