MOBILE, Ala. - The Lamar University softball team went 1-1 on the first day of the Mardi Gras Invitational hosted by the University of South Alabama on Friday.

Lamar (3-2) dropped an 11-1 decision to Ole Miss before bouncing back with a 3-2 victory over Jackson State.

"We ended the day on a positive note," Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. "We got the lead early against Jackson State and our pitching and defense did a good job to close it out."

Stephanie Meeuwsen had two RBIs for Lamar. Shannon Millman (2-0) picked up the win with her second complete game of the season. Julianne Viator drove in Lamar's only run in the loss to Ole Miss. The Rebels took advantage of four Lamar errors in the game.

"Our fielding hurt us in the first game, but came back strong against Jackson State," Bruder said. "Our hitting still isn't where it needs to be, but it will get there."

Lamar plays two more games at the tourney on Saturday, facing Jackson State at 11:15 a.m. before facing South Alabama at 5:45 p.m.
