ARLINGTON, Texas – Tina Schulz tossed a complete-game three-hitter to lead the Lamar University softball team to a 3-2 win over Creighton in the semifinals of the UTA Maverick Invitational on Saturday.
Schulz (3-2) struck out four and walked one while allowing one earned run, picking up a Lamar defense that committed a season-high four errors.
“This game showed Tina is capable of shutting down good teams,” Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. “This game shows we can beat good teams even when we don’t play our best game.”
Lamar (6-10) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to an RBI single by Candyce Carter and a run-scoring double by Jenna Holland.
Creighton (8-5) added a run in the bottom of the first and another in the fourth to the game at 2. The Lady Cardinals took the lead for good in the top of the sixth when Stephanie Meeuwsen’s two-out single plated pinch runner Shannon Sain.
After that it was up to Holland, who pitched hitless ball over the last two innings.
The win was a bit of revenge for the Lady Cardinals, who dropped a 10-3 decision to Creighton in the round-robin portion of the tournament.
It was the second game of the day for Lamar, which fell to UT Arlington by a 4-2 score in the final game of the round-robin portion.
“We really picked it up after the first game,” Bruder said. “I had a heart-to-heart talk with them after the Arlington game, and it seemed to work.”
