THIBODAUX, La. – Candyce Carter’s double down the left-field line in the top of the ninth inning drove in Jenna Holland with what proved to be the game-winning run as the Lamar Lady Cardinals rallied for a 3-2 victory over host Nicholls in Southland Conference softball action on Sunday.

Carter also homered and singled for Lamar (10-12 overall, 2-1 Southland) as the Lady Cardinals won the final two games of the weekend to capture the series.

Candyce is on a tear right now,” Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. “She comes through for us time after time.”

Left-hander Shannon Millman (5-5) picked up the win in relief, scattering seven hits over 7 2/3 innings, allowing one run, which was unearned. Millman came on with one out in the top of the first to replace starter Tina Schulz, who allowed two hits and two runs, both earned.

“Shannon Millman did a fantastic job today,” Bruder said. “She came up with big pitches in crucial situations.”

Lamar took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Carter’s team-leading fourth home run of the season. Nicholls responded with two runs in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Leah Andrus and a run-scoring single by Ashton Bennett that chased Schulz.

The Colonels (8-13, 1-2) added to their lead in the fourth when Haley Parkerson singled to center. Lamar added a solo run in the fifth, when Schulz singled and eventually scored on an error, and another in the sixth when Schulz doubled to plate Stephanie Meeuwsen.

Lamar had a chance to take the lead in the seventh, but stranded two runners. The Lady Cardinals stranded Schulz on third base in the eighth. Schulz had three hits on the day for Lamar.

That set the stage for Carter’s ninth-inning heroics, driving home Holland after she singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch.

Nicholls had runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but Millman induced a pop-up and a fly ball to end the game.

Carter and Tina Schulz had three hits apiece for Lamar. The Lady Cardinals host Bucknell in a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ford Park.

Tickets for Tuesday’s twinbill are available online at www.LamarCardinals.com, by phone at (409) 880-1715, or at the Montagne Center ticket office. Tickets will be available at Ford Park one hour before first pitch. All ticket sales at Ford Park are on a cash-only basis.
