BATON ROUGE, La. - It took a little way for the Lamar Lady Cardinals' bats to heat up Thursday. But once they did, there was nothing that could cool them off.
The Lady Cardinals pounded out 29 hits on the day en route to a doubleheader sweep of host Southern University by scores of 11-2 and 16-0 in non-conference softball action.
Lamar generated all of its offense after being held scoreless over the first four innings of the opener before erupting for nine runs in the fifth inning to take control. The Lady Cardinals (7-10) wasted no time getting on the board in the nightcap, exploding for nine runs in the top of the first to take Southern (0-17) right out of the game.
"We got off to another one of our slow starts, but we broke out of it, and that got our confidence going," Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. "This is the type of day we needed."
Every Lamar starter had at least two hits on the day, led by Casey Cromwell with five. Jenna Holland and Candyce Carter added four hits apiece on the day for Lamar. Cromwell, Carter, Tina Schulz and Shannon Sain homered for the Lady Cardinals.
Schulz (3-5) got the win in the opener, scattering three hits and allowing two runs, both unearned, over six innings in a complete-game effort. Lauren Dannelley (1-0) went all five innings in the nightcap for her first collegiate win. It was just the second shutout for the Lady Cardinals since the return of softball in 2013. Schulz blanked Prairie View A&M last season.
"Lauren pitched a great game," Bruder said. "That should really help her confidence."
Lamar opens a three-game Southland Conference series at Nicholls with a doubleheader on Saturday before single game on Sunday. The Lady Cardinals return home to host Central Arkansas in a three-game Southland Conference series on March 22-23.
