HOUSTON – Candyce Carter tied the Lamar single-season home run record, but it wasn’t enough for the Lady Cardinals as Lamar dropped both ends of a non-conference softball doubleheader at the University of Houston on Thursday.

Houston (24-10) rallied for a 10-9 win over Lamar (15-23) in the first game before taking an 8-0 decision over the Lady Cardinals in the second game.

Carter was one of three Lady Cardinals to homer in the opener. Her two-run shot in the fourth inning was her seventh of the season, tying the mark set by Donna Dugas in 1987, Lamar’s last season of softball before this year. Tina Schulz and Beverly Corry also homered for Lamar.

Corry’s home run, a two-run shot to center in the sixth inning, gave Lamar a 9-6 lead. Houston staged a three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth, capped by Haley Outon’s two-run home run. The Cougars scored the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when Katie St. Pierre singled home Taylor Duplechain.

Carter had three hits and three RBIs in the opener. Schulz also drove in three runs. Schulz (4-8) took the loss, allowing 13 hits and 10 runs, nine earned. Bailey Watts (14-3) pitched a scoreless inning of relief to get the win.

“I was very impressed with the way we hit the ball in the first game,” Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. “We have to learn to put back-to-back games together. We play close in one game and lose big in the second game.”

The second game was a pitchers’ duel for most of the way before the Cougars erupted for five runs in the bottom of the sixth.  Kendra Cullum ended the game via the mercy rule with a grand slam.

Shannon Millman (9-10) allowed two hits over the first five innings before tiring in the sixth. Millman allowed five hits and eight runs, five earned over 5 1/3 innings, walking six and striking out seven.

Houston starter Diedre Outon (4-3) pitched a complete-game three-hitter.
