BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University softball team competes in its third tournament in as many weekends when it heads to Arlington, Texas, for the UTA Maverick Invitational that gets under way Friday.

The Lady Cardinals (5-7) face 19th-ranked Tulsa (11-4) at 5 p.m. Friday before facing Creighton (5-3) at 7 p.m. Friday. Lamar resumes play at 1 p.m. Saturday against UT Arlington (6-4) in the final game of the round-robin portion of the tourney. The semifinals are slated for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday. The consolation game gets under way at 10 a.m. Sunday, with the championship game starting at noon Sunday.

"I'm excited about the tournament," Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. "Tulsa will be tough, but Creighton and UTA are a lot like us. I think those are teams we can compete with."

Bruder is hopeful the Lady Cardinals can get their offense going. Lamar is hitting just .209 as a team, with an on-base percentage of .341 and a slugging percentage of .332.

"We have to hit better without a doubt," Bruder said. "Our offense needs to help our defense."

Candyce Carter leads Lamar in batting (.414), on-base percentage (.541) and slugging percentage (.621). Julianne Viator is hitting .296 and Ashley McDowell is hitting. 290.

Left-hander Shannon Millman (3-2, 1 save, 4.08) and righty Tina Schulz (2-1, 4.80) are expected to handle most of the pitching chores this weekend.

"Shannon and Tina have pitched well and are getting better," Bruder said. "They give us a chance to win most games."

Following this weekend's tournament, Lamar returns home to host Prairie View A&M in a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m. March 5 at Ford Park.
