BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University softball team returns home to host Bucknell University in a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ford Park.

The Lady Cardinals (10-12 overall) come into the doubleheader on a two-game winning streak after taking the final two games of their three-game Southland Conference series at Nicholls over the weekend.

With four non-conference games this week (LU plays a doubleheader at Louisiana-Monroe on Thursday) before a weekend conference series at Stephen F. Austin, Lamar coach Holly Bruder plans on sprinkling some new faces into the lineup.

"These midweek games provide the opportunity for some players to earn a bigger role," Bruder said. "They'll have to take advantage of that. At this point of the season, playing midweek games is better than practice."

Candyce Carter leads Lamar in almost every offensive category. Carter is hitting .410 with four home runs and 12 RBIs. She has a .770 slugging percentage and a .526 on-base percentage.

Pitchers Melissa Smith (1-4, 7.76) and Ashley Rey (0-0, 12.60) are expected to handle some of the workload in the upcoming non-conference games.

Shannon Millman and Tina Schulz have handled most of the pitching duties this season. Millman has thrown 74 innings, while Schulz has worked 45 innings. Smith has been in the circle for 15 1/3 innings, while Rey has pitched just 1 2/3 innings.

"We need our bullpen to step up and take some of the burden off of Shannon and Tina," Bruder said. "They are going to have that chance this week to stay sharp and refine their skills."

Bucknell was 3-8 on the season heading into a non-conference doubleheader at Houston Baptist on Monday. Louisiana-Monroe is 11-14 on the season.

Tickets for Tuesday's event are available at the Montagne Center ticket office, or by calling (409) 880-1715. Tickets will be available at Ford Park one hour before game time on a cash-only basis.
