BEAUMONT, Texas -The Lamar University softball team heads to the Pelican State for a five-game road swing this week as the Lady Cardinals play a non-conference doubleheader at Southern University on Thursday before visiting Nicholls for a three-game Southland Conference set that gets under way Saturday.

Lamar (5-10 overall, 2-1 Southland) meets Southern (0-15) for a doubleheader at noon Thursday at Lady Jaguar Field in Baton Rouge, La. After that, it's off to Thibodeaux, La., for three games at Nicholls (8-18, 0-3), starting with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday and concluding with a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Lady Cardinals come off a weekend series that saw them take two of three from Southeastern Louisiana in the Southland Conference opener for both squads. Lamar got solid pitching from Shannon Millman, who went 2-0 with a 0.57 ERA, and a productive weekend from third baseman Casey Cromwell, who hit .500 with two home runs and five RBIs. Cromwell was flawless in the field as well, handling 11 chances without an error.

Millman (3-5, 4.71) became the first pitcher in Lamar history to reach the 20-win plateau for her career.

Southern has been outscored 137-23 this season.  Harley Roller and Megan Maile are each hitting .250 for the Lady Jaguars. Kayleigh Thomas leads the Southern pitching staff with an 8.61 ERA.

Nicholls, which was swept by Stephen F. Austin in its Conference-opening series, is led offensively by Brittany Marcet with a .351 batting average, four home runs and 18 RBIs. Jackie Johnson has a team-best 3.26 ERA to go along with a 6-10 record.

"Our goal for Thursday is to stay sharp," Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. "We did a lot of good things against Southeastern Louisiana, and we want to keep that up. We have some momentum going and we want to carry that into the weekend."

Following this weekend, Lamar hosts Central Arkansas in a three-game Southland Conference series March 22-23 at Ford Park.
