Softball hosts Sam Houston St. in 3-game series
March 22, 2013
BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar Lady Cardinals open the home portion of their 2013 Southland Conference schedule when they face Sam Houston State in a three-game series at Fork Park starting with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Saturday. The series concludes with a single game at 3 p.m. Sunday.
Lamar (12-18 overall, 3-3 Southland) is tied for fifth place in the conference with Sam Houston State (15-15, 3-3). Lamar looks to snap its three-game losing streak while putting an end to the Bearkats' three-game winning streak.
"Sam Houston can hit the ball with power and they know how to run the bases," Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. "We're going to have to be focused for seven innings each game."
Bruder knows her team's bats have to come alive this weekend. The Lady Cardinals are hitting just .179 during their three-game slide, and have been outscored 19-6.
"Our hitting needs to show up and our pitching needs to show up," Bruder said. "I want us to be more aggressive at the plate."
Candyce Carter leads Lamar in most offensive categories including hitting (.369), slugging percentage (.631), on-base percentage (.475) and home runs (4). Jenna Holland is next on the team with a .288 batting average.
Left-hander Shannon Millman (6-7, 4.28, 1 save) and right-hander Tina Schulz (4-6, 3.75) are the likely starters for Lamar. Millman is second in the conference with 23 appearances and 16 starts, while Schulz is tied for seventh with eight starts.
Tori Benavidez leads the Bearkats with a .413 batting average. Hillary Adams has team highs of nine home runs and 30 RBIs for Sam Houston State. Right-hander Shelby Lancaster (7-5, 3.08) leads the Bearkats in wins.
