BEAUMONT, Texas - Last season, the Lamar Lady Cardinals swept Houston Baptist on the final weekend of the season to qualify for the Southland Conference Softball Tournament. This season, the Lady Cardinals know a series win over the Huskies would go a long way toward securing a berth in this year's tournament.

That matchup comes this weekend at Ford Park as Lamar welcomes HBU in for a three-game conference series. The teams meet in a single game at 6 p.m. Friday and a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Softball clinches tourney berth with win over HBU
Candyce Carter scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Lamar a 3-2 win over Houston Baptist at Ford Park one day after the Lady Cardinals used walk-off homers in both games of a doubleheader sweep of the Huskies.

Lamar (12-15 overall, 7-4 Southland) is tied with Central Arkansas for second place in the SLC, one game behind McNeese State. Houston Baptist (11-17, 7-5) is tied with am Houston State for fourth place, a half-game behind Lamar. Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin are tied for the sixth, and final, tourney spot with 6-5 conference records.

"The conference race is very tight right now," Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. "Every game is important. Obviously, we're in a battle with Houston Baptist, so it is imperative that we win this series."

Both teams have been productive offensively in conference play this season. Lamar is hitting .316 in conference play, while Houston Baptist hits at a .297 clip.

Tina Schulz leads Lamar with a .356 batting average, and has team-best figures of a .455 batting average, five home runs and 14 RBIs in conference play. Candyce Carter is hitting .405 against Southland pitching for Lamar.

Shay Orsak leads Houston Baptist with a .400 batting average. Orsak is hitting .389 in conference games.

The Lamar pitching staff is second in the conference in SLC games with a 2.27 ERA. Schulz, a right-hander is 2-3 with a 2.21 ERA, while left-hander Shannon Millman is 5-1 with a 2.28 ERA against Southland foes.

Right-hander Emily Mueller is 3-1 with a 2.14 ERA in Southland games for HBU. The Huskies use two other right-handers in their rotation: Kendall Stiefel (2-2, 4.26) and Shannon O'Connor (2-2, 5.06).

Saturday is Military and First Responders Appreciation Day, with all military, police, fire and EMT personnel receiving free admission when in uniform or with a valid ID.
