BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar's Ashley McDowell was named the Southland Conference Softball Hitter of the Week the conference announced Monday. McDowell is the first Lamar player to receive the award this season.
McDowell, a freshman first baseman from Plano, Texas, hit .733 over five games this past week, with one double, three home runs and five RBIs. She had an on-base percentage of .778 and a slugging percentage of 1.400.
McDowell played key roles in Lamar's two Southland Conference victories over Southeastern Louisiana. Her two-run home run on Saturday proved to be the difference as Lamar rallied for a 7-6 win. On Sunday, her eighth-inning single plated the winning run in a 5-4 extra-inning victory.
"Getting our first player of the week is huge," Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. "Ashley had a phenomenal week. Hopefully this is just the first of many more to come."
McDowell is hitting .298 this season with a school-record nine home runs. She has 20 RBIs and leads the Lady Cardinals with seven stolen bases. She has an eight-game hitting streak and has reached base safely in 10 straight games.
Lamar (20-26 overall, 11-7 Southland) is tied for third place in the conference. Lamar hosts Texas Southern in a non-conference game at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Ford Park before a three-game series at conference-leading McNeese State this weekend.
