Softball drops 5-3 decision at Texas Southern
The Lamar Lady Cardinals couldn't overcome a slow start in a 5-3 non-conference softball loss at Texas Southern on Tuesday.

"We didn't play very well in that game," Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. "We'd like to get a little payback on Wednesday, but we're going to have to play better."

Texas Southern leads the nation with a .353 batting average. Thomasina Garza leads the Lady Tigers with a .474 batting average, placing her ninth in the nation.

Candyce Carter leads Lamar with a .358 batting average and 24 RBIs. Ashley McDowell, the reigning Southland Conference Hitter of the Week after batting .733 last week, is hitting .298 on the season with a team-leading nine home runs.

Following Wednesday's game, Lamar will prepare for a three-game Southland Conference series at SLC leader McNeese State. The series opens with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Saturday and wraps up with a single game at 2 p.m. Sunday.

"Wednesday's game is another midweek game that prepares us for our conference games," Bruder said. "We have to be sharp this weekend."

Tickets for Wednesday's game are available at the Montagne Center ticket office or by calling (409) 880-1715. Tickets will be available at Ford Park one hour before first pitch on a cash-only basis.
