BEAUMONT, Texas - After sweeping Houston Baptist in a Southland Conference series over the weekend, the Lamar Lady Cardinals swept the conference's weekly softball awards on Monday.
Ashley McDowell earned Hitter of the Week honors for the second time this season, while Shannon Millman garnered Pitcher of the Week kudos for the first time this season.
McDowell powered the Lamar offense over the weekend as the Lady clinched a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament that gets under way Thursday in Natchitoches, La. The freshman from Plano, Texas (Plano H.S.), hit two home runs in the series opener, including a walk-off blast in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Lamar the 4-3 win. She followed that performance up with another home run and two RBI in the nightcap in Lamar's 8-7 win. In the three-game series, McDowell recorded a .417 (5-for-12) batting average with an impressive 1.167 slugging percentage, finishing with three home runs, four RBIs and five runs scored.
Millman was the winning pitcher in all three games in Lamar's sweep of Houston Baptist. The junior left-hander from Pasadena, Texas (Pasadena Memorial H.S.), gave up only 12 hits in 14 2/3 innings of work while striking out six hitters in three wins. Millman notched a 1.91 ERA on the week while picking up her 13th conference win of season, tying her for the most in league play. The Huskies only managed a .214 batting average against Millman on the weekend.
"It's awesome that Ashley and Shannon were honored for their efforts," Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. "This capped off a great weekend for us."
The Lady Cardinals depart Lamar at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Lamar will practice at Northwestern State on Wednesday before meeting Central Arkansas in the tournament's opening game at 11 a.m. Thursday.
