Softball holds first practice
BEAUMONT, Texas - The return of softball to Lamar University got a little bit closer today as the Lady Cardinals conducted their first official practice at Ford Park.
"I'm excited. It's good to get on the field," Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. "I think they are eager to play."
While today's practice was the first official session, the players have been busy in the weight room. In addition, Bruder and her staff have worked hard to get the diamond at Ford Park in shape and looking good. The coaches have installed a new playing field, bullpens and batting stations, refurbished the dugouts, painted the seating areas, installed new fencing and patting, acquired a sound system and installed a press box. A new scoreboard is expected to be in place soon.
"We have had a lot of people who have helped with their donations," Bruder said. "We're very proud of the field we have here."
The Lady Cardinals open an eight-game fall schedule when they host Texas Woman's University in a doubleheader at noon Sept. 22. Lamar, which had softball from 1983-87, will play a full Southland Conference schedule in the spring.
"We're going to work hard," Bruder said. "I think it's going to be a fun season."
