BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University softball team opens its fall 2013 exhibition slate by hosting San Jacinto College at 4 p.m. Saturday at Port Neches-Groves High School.

Lamar went 24-35 last spring in its first season of softball since 1987. The Cardinals finished fifth in the Southland Conference with a 14-13 mark.

The Cardinals return all of their starters from last season, led by Candyce Carter, who hit .339 with a school-record 31 RBIs, Stephanie Meeuwsen, who batted .318 and Ashley McDowell, who belted a school-record 12 home runs.

Left-hander Shannon Millman (17-16, 4.30) and right-hander Tina Schulz (5-13, 5.03) return to lead the pitching staff.

“I’m excited to hit the ground running,” Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. “We’ve looked good in practice so far. We look forward to building off of last season.”

Saturday’s game will mark the debut of Lamar’s newcomers: catcher/infielder Brynn Baca, outfielder Presleigh Green and pitcher/infielder Mackenzie Walker. Baylie Comeaux, who redshirted last season, is also expected to play for the Cardinals on Saturday.

Lamar is scheduled to play eight games this fall, with the other home game set for 2 p.m. Oct. 20 against Lamar State College-Port Arthur.

Admission to Lamar’s home games this fall is free.
