Softball opens fall season with Saturday doubleheader
Sept. 18, 2012
BEAUMONT, Texas – The wait for the return of softball to Lamar University comes to an end Saturday afternoon. The Lady Cardinals will take to the field for games for the first time since 1987, when they host Texas Woman’s University in a noon doubleheader at Ford Park in a pair of fall exhibition games. The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to play eight exhibition games this fall before playing a full schedule this spring as a full member of the Southland Conference. “These fall games will give us a good opportunity to assess where we are,” Bruder said. “You’re able to determine some things in practice, but games don’t lie. We’re going to see who steps up in crucial situations.” Texas Woman’s University is a formidable opening foe for Lamar. The Pioneers went 37-17 last season as they advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament. “Texas Woman’s is a very good program,” Bruder said. “They are a quick team and very well-coached. It will be a good challenge for us.” Admission to Saturday’s doubleheader is free. #LUsoftball
