BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University softball coach Holly Bruder announced that infielder Alyssa Burnett will transfer to Lamar from the University of Pittsburgh in January and will play for the Lady Cardinals this spring.
Burnett is a native Texan, playing two years of softball at Katy High School and two years at Brenham High School, graduating from Brenham in 2012.
Burnett set a Brenham High School record with a 27-game hitting streak as a senior, finishing the season with a .525 batting average, 14 doubles, five triples and 50 RBIs. She hit a school-record .528 as a junior at Brenham after hitting .383 as a freshman and .411 as a sophomore at Katy High School.
“We’re fortunate enough to get a high-caliber athlete at this time of year,” Bruder said. Alyssa can strengthen our depth in the infield, and will definitely help bolster our offense.”
Burnett was a two-time first-team all-state performer at Brenham High School, and helped her team share a district championship as a senior She was the UIL District 17-4A offensive MVP as a senior. Burnett played travel softball with the Austin Storm Gold and the Houston Power Gold.
Lamar, which is bringing back softball for the first time since 1987, opens the spring season Feb. 9 when it hosts UTSA in a doubleheader at Ford Park. Season tickets and individual-game tickets will go on sale in early January.
